Registration is underway at Water Street Glassworks, located at 140/142 Water Street, in the Benton Harbor Arts District. A weekend workshop of Beginning Glassblowing 1, April 25 & 26 is the perfect introductory solution for those with busy workweek schedules. Students get their first experiences with the exciting medium of glass are then ready for more advanced study in Beginning Glassblowing 2 and 3 in following weeks. Glassblowing classes for teens are also offered on Wednesdays after school beginning April 22. The one-day workshop, A Taste of Glass takes place on Sunday, May 3 and is taught by Jerry Catania, Carolyn O’Hearn and Becky Wehmer. Students try three glass topics: paperweights, fusing and bead making. Once you get “a taste” you may want to follow further study in one or more of the topics. No previous experience is required. Instructors Becky Wehmer and Angela Caldwell teach a one-day workshop, Build-a-Bead Necklace April 25 in which you can learn to make your own glass beads and wear them home on a necklace of your own creation. Multi-level Beadmaking for ages 13 and up, offered May 9 and 10 is a great Mother’s Day activity. Students learn the basic techniques of making glass beads using a tabletop torch and shape mold and decorate molten glass into beads. A very popular workshop Glass & Metal Sculpture for the Garden is taught by Jerry Catania and Lou Mark, May 15-17, Friday evening through Sunday. Learn to ladle molten glass into sand molds then move on to metal forging and welding, with students completing one or two garden sculptures by the end of the weekend. Spin Cast Bowls, another popular favorite one-day workshop, is May 2. Students will form sand molds, pour molten glass and let centrifugal force do the rest. Expect to make several bowls.
