SATYA - THIRDSTONE CONCERT SERIES TO LAUNCH IN OCTOBER - BRIAN CUTEAN THIS SATURDAY

Yeah, ThirdStone has again teamed up with Satya Yoga Center in Saugatuck to put together another fall/winter concert series. Launching the series this season will be my brother Brian's 14th (or sometimes referred to as the 3rd "12th annual") annual West Michigan concert this Saturday evening at Satya. (more info from Michele directly below). We've got another couple surprises coming up soon in the series - we'll fill you in soon!

Here's the latest from Michele at Satya:

We are 'extra' excited to welcome back our dear friend Brian Cutean (QTN) for an evening of jammin', word play and the such on Saturday, October 17 at 7:30pm. This is the first event in our fall / winter "Indoor-Barefoot-Picnic-Concert-Series" where you are invited to pack a picnic basket chock full of all sorts of goodies, bring a comfy blanket, pillows (heck, wear your pjs!), and lie back and chill with some good friends and great music. Brian asked that I make this an all-age show, and keep it at an $8 donation, or considering the economy, a "what you can afford" type show, so great big hugs to Brian for his generosity. He is a true yogi.

CELERY POND ADVOCATES GROUP TO HOLD FUND-RAISING GET-TOGETHER
“A Get-Together to Support Art, Nature and Community”

Location: Arthur Frederick and Mark VanderLeek’s Country Place, 122nd Avenue in GangesStreet - call for directions

Friday, August 28, 2009, from 5 – 7pm, Hors d’oeuvres and wine - $35 per person

Celery Pond Advocates is a 501(c)(3) organization allowing $25 tax deductible. Questions, call 269-637-1491

Celery Pond Advocates is organizing a get-together to show their continuing support to preserve and enhance the public lands of the Celery Pond area. We invite Celery Pond members and supporters, along with members of all area clubs to join us. During the event we’ll discuss what we can do together as a community to blend art and nature in the areas around Celery Pond.

With the recent addition of two sections of lands within the Celery Pond area into the South Haven Parks system, CPA will be exploring different avenues of gifts to the City for these areas. A sculpture by Marian Anderson, a renowned local sculptor, is one of the works being considered. We will also be raising monies and accepting offers of in-kind services to beautify the area around the proposed installation, as well as raising monies to contribute signage about the Celery Pond wetland.

The get-together is being held at the lovely country home of Arthur Frederick, owner of Button-Petter Gallery, and building contractor Mark VanderLeek, located just north of Glenn. See how art and nature come together on their property which overlooks shady woods, wetland and lake: something inspiring for everyone.

Tickets are on-sale at Wolverine Hardware (420 Phoenix Street) and Whimsy (415 Phoenix Street). Directions and small map will be given with ticket purchase. We extend a big thank-you for your support and are grateful for the generous donated catering talents of Suzie Blair.

NEW SHOW OPENS AT MARS GALLERY THIS WEEKEND
Opening Reception for Absolute Fantasy show - AT MARS GALLERY, CHICAGO, FRIDAY, JULY 24, 6 - 9PM
Featuring artwork by Sean Williams, Sabina Cosic and Alan Emerson Hicks ...curated by SusaN Aurinko of FLATFILE galleries Friday, July 24, - 6 00pm - 9:00pm - Sponsored by Goose Island Brewery Company...

Light Miners is a series of photographs of a world where Mother Nature gives back to humankind in the form of glowing pods of light and energy-a gentle comment on contemporary culture's petrol-dependency. Shot on location in the deep basements of Chicago Loop buildings as well as in public parks, Williams rounded out the productions by compositing scaled models of windmills and caverns to help create the world of the Light Miners. Originally made to be shown on chromogenic transparencies, half of this series will be shown on archival inkjet prints.

The "Grimmed" project is consisted of three original brothers Grimm fairy tales. The stories are "Cinderella", "Little Red Riding Hood", and "Hansel and Gretel". There are ten images in every story and they are sequentially illustrating the major events in each story, respectfully. The images were created combinations of photographs and various digital illustration techniques. "Grimmed" brings the original tales as told by the brothers Grimm back to life.

Time machines are conceptual sculptures built biannually. They are created in odd numbered years and displayed the following even numbered year. They are a part of the "temporal sculpture" series (sculptures with a time element). Time machines are partially audience participatory. The viewer is given the opportunity to sit on or stand in front of the piece and have a temporal experience with it. A reel of video tape is destroyed during this experience which will eventually get used on the piece.

The Show will be on exhibit from July 24, 2009 thru August 22, 2009.

There are several other events and benefits going on at the gallery this month...go to their website marsgallery.com for more info

1st ANNUAL WEST MICHIGAN MUSICIAN’S BLOCK PARTY

GRAND RAPIDS - One Trick Pony Grill & Taproom, along with The Cottage Bar, will host the 1st Annual West Michigan Musician’s Block Party on Sunday August 2nd from 1:30 pm- 9:00 pm. The event, featuring an outdoor stage on La Grave Avenue and an indoor stage at the Cottage Bar, will feature over 35 bands and acoustic acts performing. The beneficiary of the inaugural block party will be Grand Rapids own “Ambassador of local music”, Ralston Bowles, a singer/songwriter from the area who is currently receiving treatment for Colon Cancer. In addition to the musical acts, there will be a silent auction at both venues featuring original art, handcrafted guitars and other items.

Music coordinator Michael Packer and One Trick Pony/Cottage Bar owners Dan & Lisa Verhil hope to make the Block Party an annual event that will raise funds for musicians who are dealing with health and financial issues. “Each year, it seems that more and more local musicians are dealing with these issues and we want to give back to artists that give so much quality of life to the community” says Packer. “Ralston and his family were the impetus for this first benefit, but the need will continue to exist beyond this year for other musicians.”

Artists currently slated to perform include 13th Hour, Josh Rose, Rick Beerhorst, Chance Jones, Roger McNaughton, Ric Troll, Nobody’s Darlin’, Folk Brothers, Arganik, Mid Life Crisis, Jimmie Stagger, Creolization, Drew Nelson, Troll for Trout, The Concussions, La Famiglia, Fainting Generals, Organissimo and Delilah DeWylde & the Lost Boys.

Admission to the block party is a minimum $15 donation for those over 12 and free to attendees 12 and under. Donations to the silent auction may be dropped off by July 26th at the Richard App Gallery, located at 910 Cherry SE.

THIRDSTONE NEWS

Hello All!

THIRDSTONE GALLERY NEWS: I haven't been providing a whole lot of info lately about what ThirdStone's been up to so, I'll give ya just a couple bits of info until more can be said... First of all, look for the next ThirdStone show coming up later this Summer....There will be some terrific new works from some some of your longtime ThirdStone favorites, plus, the return of a ThirdStone artist with some startling new works and, one who hasn't shown with us for the last half-dozen years AND, as has long been the custom, I'll also be introducing a brand new artist who's, never shown before anywhere. The show will kick-off in Late August and the location will be announced soon. There are two additional West Michigan shows slated for the remainder of the year and 2 "out-of-town" ones as well. I'll report more details on all of them soon.

THIS HERE CRAZY THIRDSTONE NEWSLETTER - As the subscriber base and, the sheer volume of news it now covers both continue to grow exponentially, I've been scratching my head trying to figure out how to make it better. bigger, easier to read and, easier to keep current. And, to make it somewhat less-time-consuming for me. The solution I've come up with is to launch a brand new ThirdStone News website so that news can be found more readily by "department" or category. It will also have public posting areas so that readers can post events we might otherwise miss and, it will have a free "classified ads" section too for all kinds of the "good stuff" you normally find here in the email version. .

Okay. Here's the latest news of what's goin' on around the area...

THIRDSTONE NEWS

Hello All!

I've been having too much fun hiding out! My hiatus from managing the retail gallery is starting to cultivate much interesting fruit. I plan on being able to fill you all in on in some detail soon. But not yet. I do however appreciate all the interesting rumours I keep hearing about what I and ThirdStone are up to... Yes, I know it's kinda naughty to keep it all under wraps but, there actually are good reasons to do so. For now, all I can tell you is that there will be at least two special ThirdStone shows and exhibition events coming up; one, later this Summer and another, this Fall. While I'm not exactly taking the Summer off, I am taking my time to make sure these events will really be something special. More on all the rest of the crazy stuff soon.... or at least kinda soon. For now, here's the latest news of what's goin' on around the area...

NOTE: Our publication schedule is generally every other week except when it's not. With that in mind, remember to send me your news items at least a couple weeks before they happen. It's important to me that we cover as much here as possible and to do so, I of course, rely on all of you to tell us what you've got in the works. Soon this newsletter will evolve into what will be primarily an interactive website own its own; that will allow quicker, more seamless updates and additions. Until that happens though, I want to make sure that it continues to provide the best and broadest coverage that it can. For now, here's the latest news of what's goin' on around the area...

NEXT FENNVILLE "TUESDAY IN THE PARK CONCERT - JUNE 23 FEATURING "WHO HIT JOHN?"

The second concert of the Seventh Annual Fennville “Tuesdays in the Park” free community concert series is coming up Tuesday June 23 and will feature the Kalamazoo based bluegrass band Who Hit John?. The concert will be held at Memorial/Paradise Park on north Maple ST, downtown Fennville. Music begins at 7PM. In case of inclement weather the concert will be moved to an inside location to be announced.

According to their press kit, “Who Hit John? has been performing, jamming and busking around southwest Michigan since 2006. They've brought their energetic and original old time sound to bars, basements, street corners, concert halls - anywhere they can get folks stompin', singin' and clappin'. Joined together by a love for acoustic music and its vibrant scene in Michigan, this derelict group of misfits and prophets are intent on taking the world by storm, one song at a time. Whether kicking out raucous fiddle tunes, dirty and greasy southern blues, or high and lonesome bluegrass serenades, Who Hit John? keeps the home fires burning, carrying on the tradition of American roots music. All five members write and sing, providing a wealth of material and influences. Who Hit John? always brings audiences something exciting and new. “

The band was formed by Nick "Hamdog" Vander Vliet on mandolin, Kris "Will DoLittle" Kehn on guitar, and Daniel "Catfish" McCartney on banjo and slide guitar. Shortly thereafter, Nathan "Django Watley" Dannison joined on fiddle, harmonica and jaw harp. The fresh-faced foursome went through a number of bass players, before meeting recording engineer Ian "Dr. Hoot" Gorman while mixing their debut CD, Old Gray Road.

Free to the public, the Tuesdays in the Park concerts are sponsored by the businesses of the Greater Fennville Chamber of Commerce.Concessions will be available, with proceeds going to the Greater Fennville Chamber of Commerce scholarship fund. Visit the Chamber website at www.greaterfennville.com for more information and a schedule of future concerts.

Glassblowing classes for teens are also offered on Wednesdays after school beginning April 22. The one-day workshop, A Taste of Glass takes place on Sunday, May 3 and is taught by Jerry Catania, Carolyn O’Hearn and Becky Wehmer. Students try three glass topics: paperweights, fusing and bead making. Once you get “a taste” you may want to follow further study in one or more of the topics. No previous experience is required. Instructors Becky Wehmer and Angela Caldwell teach a one-day workshop, Build-a-Bead Necklace April 25 in which you can learn to make your own glass beads and wear them home on a necklace of your own creation. Multi-level Beadmaking for ages 13 and up, offered May 9 and 10 is a great Mother’s Day activity.
